"Up until now, what the cancer patients gained by early
referral to fertility preservation was not scientifically studied. Our work
proved that women with breast cancer who are referred to fertility
preservation early during the process, before breast surgery, can preserve a
larger number of eggs or embryos, because they have time to undergo multiple
cycles of fertility preservation treatment. We also showed that, if they are
referred early, they on average start chemotherapy a month earlier then
those referred after breast surgery. Our study highlights and proves
the importance of those that are involved early in the diagnosis and
care of breast cancer to be alert about the necessity of early referral
to fertility preservation so that these women can maximize their chance of
future conception and do so in a safe manner" (Comment
